Arnold McBay is a mixed-media artist working in drawing, sculpture and installation. He teaches studio courses at Brock University and has led art workshops in public art galleries and high schools across Ontario. Much of his work has focused on an exploration of senescent concerns, memory and aesthetics.
In 1995, he was the subject of a major exhibition at the London Regional Art Gallery (titled “Passage”) and has since been represented by Thielsen Gallery of London, Ontario. Recently he has exhibited with sculptor Jane Adeney at the WKP Kennedy Gallery in North Bay, Ontario (2005) and ceramicist Susan Wintrop at the Burlington Art Centre (2009) and The Niagara Pumphouse Visual Art Centre in Niagara-on-the-Lake (2010). His work is also featured in a solo exhibition at the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre (2011). Other recent activities include a month long studio residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris, France the summer of 2007.
He has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants, most recently a purchase award for best in show at the annual City of St. Catharines Juried Exhibition. Recently his works have been taken into the Permanent Collections of the Grimsby Public Art Gallery, the City of St. Catharines, the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery in Owen Sound, and the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre.
My work is an examination of the senses and a consideration of the ephemeral nature of human experience. The result is a body of work reflecting on the nature of perception and consciousness, an ontological inquiry of sorts. I feel my role as an artist is to dream (in Borges’ notion of writing as nothing more than a guided dream) on the borderline between my own personal experience and the ephemeral nature of our conscious and the world at large.
